Combed cotton: characteristics and benefits

Not many people know that there are different types of cotton, and one of them is combed cotton . The process for making any of this fabric is the same from the start: stripping. This refers to the action of separating the cotton flower from the stems, seeds, and leaves. But the difference lies in the subsequent steps of the process, in which the cotton is more or less refined until it becomes a thread for creating garments. Combed cotton goes through many more stages than conventional cotton, hence its excellent quality.

What is combed cotton and how is it produced?

Once the cotton has been stripped, after separating the raw material from the leaves and seeds, the cotton flower remains. This is transformed into a thread that, through the carding process , becomes the most common cotton, carded cotton. This cotton undergoes a stretching and twisting process to leave it fine, with its familiar appearance. But combed cotton goes a step further: it undergoes the stretching and twisting process, then is combed again, then stretched and twisted again. After this combing process , the result is a more refined cotton fiber, with longer, stronger, and incredibly fine fibers. Combed cotton is therefore much more elaborate, of better quality, and softer than carded cotton. While the longer fibers are formed , impurities are removed and the short fibers are discarded. In other words, only the highest quality material is retained. This results in a taut, durable, and strong cotton thread.

Advantages of combed cotton

In general, cotton has many advantages, which is why it's the preferred fabric for underwear. Combed cotton, in particular, has even greater advantages due to its complex manufacturing process. Here are some:
  • Quality . This is undoubtedly one of the most visible and tangible characteristics of combed cotton. Garments made with this fabric have an incredible density, which is noticeable to the naked eye and even more so to the touch. This characteristic is especially interesting in underwear.
  • Durability and strength . The long fibers that make up combed cotton are much more durable and resistant. They break less easily and also snag much less, which provides much greater durability than garments made with carded cotton.
  • Softness . The softness of the fabric against the skin is undoubtedly one of the greatest advantages of combed cotton. Combed cotton garments are soft, fresh, and resistant to washing, so they are unlikely to lose their original shine.
An example of the quality, softness, and durability of combed cotton is Abanderado's Suavidad Real line , which offers underwear made from 100% combed cotton, without any added fibers. This results in briefs, T-shirts, and boxers that feel as soft and light as a second skin. Thanks to the texture of this type of cotton, the underwear offers great comfort and high absorption. It has no thick seams, is allergy-free, and, of course, won't chafe the skin. In short, combed cotton differs from carded cotton in that the manufacturing process is much more laborious and detailed. This results in longer, stronger, and more durable fibers that withstand wear and tear from washing and offer a softer feel. For this reason, combed cotton men's underwear is perfect for staying comfortable and cool all day long.
